The Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island and it was created by using land reclamation. Land reclamation is carried out by filling the area with large amounts of heavy rock and/or cement, then filling with clay and dirt until the desired height is reached.
The Palm Jumeirah is the first palm completed and there are other palms and man-made islands awaiting completion. In June 2001, The Palm Jumeirah started construction and residential residence began moving onto the palm in 2006. In 2009, the Palm Jumeirah Monorail was added. A 5.4km (3.4) mile monorail connecting the Atlantis Hotel to the mainland of Dubai. The Palm Jumeirah consists of a tree trunk, a crown with 16 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms 11km long breakwater.
Fun fact: The Palm was built from sand and rocks (no concrete or steel was used to build the island).
